BENCH TO BARDA PANEL SERIES

This 6 panel discussion series gave upcoming researchers and innovators insight into how to take their product from the benchtop to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Developmental Authority.

OVERVIEW

Experts with specific backgrounds provided innovators with an overview of key resources available for securing funding, advancing their product from all stages of development, and educated them on the many funding opportunities available within BARDA and BARDA DRIVe. Through these panels, researchers with products related to immerging infectious diseases can receive direct mentorship for creating a sustainable business model for their technology.

WHAT THIS SERIES WILL COVER

The series of panels was designed for individuals conducting scientific research who are interested in commercializing their product. Experts conducted six panels each with a specific focus and designed to educate attendees on topics such as: what opportunities are best for them given their current technology readiness level, where and when to engage with the right government partners to advance their solution, and insight into gaining funding at all stages of development.

This program is a collaborative effort between BARDA and the programs they are partnered with through DRIVe, including: Biolocity, First Flight Venture Center, New Orleans Biolnnovation Center, Purdue University, MedTech Innovator, New York State Center for Biotechnology, UMass M2D2, University City Science Center, and University of Missouri.

The event concluded with an audience Q&A in which the researchers could ask experts in these fields direct questions for moving their product from the bench towards commercialization.

PANEL 1
SPIN YOUR TECHNOLOGIES OUT OF THE LAB

This panel was designed for individuals seeking to take their technology out of the lab and commercialize their research. They discussed the best way to spin a technology out of the lab, negotiating with tech transfer offices, and other essential topics to assist early researchers who are interested in spinning their research in the lab towards commercialization.

PANEL 2
BUILD YOUR TECHNOLOGY INTO A PRODUCT (NSF SBIR. I-CORPS)

This panel discussed business model development, customer discovery and user-centric design, and when to factor in the regulatory and reimbursement pathways for your products. Through this discussion, entrepreneurs had the opportunity to learn how to position their technology as a competitive product within the marketplace. Additionally, it highlighted the National Science Foundation SBIR/STTR program and the NSF Innovation Corps, two companies which can assist these innovators in building these strategies.

PANEL 3
SUPPORTING STARTUP GROWTH VIA ACCELERATOR PROGRAMS

This panel was designed to educate researchers on the bench side of the myriad of resources available to assist in the commercialization of their technology. The panel discussed the different program options, funding sources, and partners available for the advancement of their technology. Additionally, the panelist explored the best method for interacting with these acceleration programs, and other insights into taking advantage of the many resources which will help advance their technology.

PANEL 4
HOW CAN EARLY-STAGE COMPANIES WORK WITH BARDA?

During this panel, early stage companies that have developed a proof of concept or prototype around a health security use case will learn how to best engage with BARDA as an early stage company. Through reviewing The Easy Broad Agency Announcement (EZ BAA) and hearing from past EZ-BAA awardees„ innovators will receive advice from BARDA evaluators on how to fill out the EZ-BAA application and the best practices for EZ-BAA funding opportunities.

PANEL 5
PARTNERING WITH BARDA VIA THE BROAD AGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT

This panel highlighted the various BARDA divisions, and discussed the Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) contracting tool as a means of funding advanced health security product development. Leaders from across BARDA discussed the different BARDA divisions, the criteria that needs to be met when completing a BAA application, and the best practices for companies looking to apply for BAA funding at BARDA.

PANEL 6
SCALE YOUR COMPANY VIA STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS & VENTURE FINANCING

This panel emphasized the importance of identifying the right partnership in order to provide a startup with access to new customers and funding. Under the lens of the health security sector, panelists discussed how to go about developing a good strategic partnership, whether with another company or an investment firm. Additionally, they discussed how entrepreneurs should account for different equity and fundraising models in their fundraising strategy.
